2009 City-Bay Fun Run – Training

July 17th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Mr. Bennett

This year I am planning to run my best City-Bay yet. After a reasonable first attempt and last year’s debacle, I am ready to have a serious go and prepare accordingly.

The first articles in The Sunday Mail have begun appearing and training is well and truly underway for many. I’ve started quite slowly, just trying to get the legs adjusted to regular running again and have been running 30-40 minutes 4 times per week.

I have been able to maintain this for a good month now and am ready to try and increase my intensity a bit to make some progress. I’ve begun running some intervals in some of my runs and am going to try incorporate some hills next.

It has supposedly been the wettest Adelaide July in some years but, luckily, I have managed to avoid most of it–finding a rain-free half and hour even on the wettest day. It has been a bit windy though but my new Brooks jacket has been a brilliant purchase. Lightweight, waterproof, hooded – an absolute necessity at this time of the year.

I also bought some new shoes because last year I wasn’t accustomed to running in the shoes I ran in. The result was blistering unlike I’ve ever experienced.

Hopefully posting my progress will help me remain accountable and persevere with my training. I know Steve is training hard and so is the rest of Adelaide.

To anyone else training, keep it up. If I can do it, anyone can.

Hi, I run too!! Do you have any tips to share to better prepare for a marathon. I’ve only participated in one, but plan on doing more. If possible, please email them to me…thanks!!!

Hey, you have done a marathon before? that is amazing. I doubt I could give you any tips, I should be asking you.

I would like to have a go at a marathon one day but I think I would need a fair bit more regular running experience before even thinking about starting to train for one.

From what I have read before, it can take a year’s worth of training to be able to cover that distance.

    Hi Sean,
I have a friend in Queensland who recently completed the Queensland Airport marathon! Like you, I am sure, I find it difficult to comprehend the commitment in training required to achieve this. I struggle with 12 KM’s…. I still argue with myself on every run I do. Since starting running at the end of Feb, when I turned 50, I am now struggling to keep up the motivation. As I am running in the dark in the early hours of the morning I have suffered from falls on three ocasions. This has hampered my training somwhat and I have to conceed, I am not going to reach my 60min City-Bay goal. Maybe 63 mins! Good luck on the day Sean ;-)

16 kph wnw winds @ 9am with a min 8C overnight and max 20 for the day.
Only 30% chance of rain and that is likely to be less than 1mm.
    Have fun!

Sean, how did you go? I missed my target by about 6m30s I think. Disapointing really. Will not know until Tusday I guess. There is always next year I suppose!

OK Sean, I have my time for my first City-Bay as a runner, 65m51s. I am disapointed as I was aiming for 60 mins. I scanned the paper for your result but could not find it. Maybe I missed it or maybe you didn’t run this year?

Well done on running it this time Steve. 65 mins isn’t bad at all. Better than 6min/km.

I actually piked out this year and didn’t run. It’s weird because I had done much more running in the lead up to this year than in the past 2 years but just didn’t feel up to it.

I guess the motivation kind of dropped off a bit. For me, the mental side of the running is one of the hardest parts. I get into a comfortable pace and don’t really push myself enough.

Having said that, I still might have entered if I didn’t have to go in person to the office, do it and pay the late fee. It’s a bit of a hassle. I really need to enter early.
